Beer, Bourbon, & BBQ Festival Fun

About a week and a half ago I went to a Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ Festival right down the road in Cary, NC.

My parents happened to be passing through town on their way home from a beach trip, and my dad is a big bourbon fan (hello we’re from Kentucky) so we thought it would be a fun adventure.

IMG_2216

Our friend Steven, who’s in medical school with Derek, joined us as well as a couple of my parents’ friends.

IMG_1528

The festival was held at Koka Booth Amphitheatre, which was a beautiful venue. We were all thankful for the shade from the trees considering it’s constantly 90+ degrees here in North Carolina during July and August.

IMG_1532

When we got there we received our tasting flutes. I was surprised that these were actually nice glasses with the logo on them. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but their motto “Drink. Eat. Relax.” is on the back side.

IMG_1537

The tickets covered tastings for the 60 beers and 40 bourbon available. There were booths all over the place.

IMG_1539

By the way, as much as I want to like bourbon, I’m just not a fan. Fortunately many of the bourbon booths had delicious spiked teas. Woodford Reserve had a particularly delicious peach bourbon tea that I’d love to recreate at home.

It’s a bit of a bummer that food wasn’t included with the tickets, but we definitely weren’t disappointed with the barbecue we got. So good!

IMG_1533

I seriously get hungry just looking at that picture. If we move out of North Carolina next year, the barbecue around here will be sorely missed.

It was a fun day for us all, and I would certainly recommend it for other people in the area. After all, what’s better than sharing a few drinks and good food with family and friends?

IMG_1523

P.S. Don’t worry, we took an Uber to and from the festival after all those adult beverages. 🙂

The Time I Practiced Yoga at a Bar {Weekend Recap}

Hello, hello! Hope your week is off to a good start. I wanted to share a recap of my weekend because it ended up being a fun and busy one.

On Friday night Derek and I went to The Black Keys concert. I bought the tickets as a birthday gift for Derek back in August, so we were pumped to finally go to the concert.

IMG_0691

It was just a little dark at the concert, haha!

I took a video of them playing the song below, but I had some trouble uploading it. Instead, I’ll share the music video.

The Black Keys were great live! I’d definitely recommend seeing them in concert if you’re a fan.

On Saturday morning I met up with my best friend Jenna for a yoga class at Clouds Brewing.  The “price” for admission was a toy for Toys for Tots. Over a hundred people attended, which resulted in an awesome donation for Toys for Tots. Pretty neat idea for a toy drive, right?

IMG_0699

The class turned out to be really challenging. Definitely not for beginners. Fortunately, many of the people who attended were just like Jenna and me: yoga amateurs. We had a great time and cracked up at our attempts to get into certain positions.

IMG_0695

It was fun and almost surreal to practice yoga in a bar. This was the view to my right during the class.

IMG_0696

After such a tough class, it was totally necessary to reward ourselves with beer and lunch.

IMG_0700

We started our meal with a beer cheese appetizer. It came with sliced bratwurst, sauerkraut, and pretzel bread. It was all good, but the pretzel bread was the bomb.

IMG_0701

For my meal I got a flatbread with grilled chicken, spinach, feta, and red onion. It was delicious. Gotta love feta.

IMG_0702

After the yoga class and lunch, we went to see the newest Hunger Games movie. I headed home in the afternoon and spent the evening with the hubby.

On Sunday Derek and I went to church and then headed over to our friends’ house to make gingerbread houses. We, of course, had to dress for the occasion.

IMG_0705

Our friends were prepared. So. Much. Candy. (And wine.)

IMG_0708

Our friends made the gingerbread from scratch and had a fire going. Does it get more Christmas-y than that?

IMG_0710

I even got some quality dog time in. Isn’t Pippa cute?

IMG_0714

Candid action shot.

Fun time had by all!

What a great weekend! Have you done any fun holiday activities yet?

18 Hours in Chattanooga {Weekend Recap}

Hello! Hope your week is going swimmingly! I wanted to pop in and tell you about my weekend. It was an absolute whirlwind.

After grabbing a quick dinner on Friday after work, Derek and I headed to Raleigh to celebrate my best friend Jenna’s birthday.

Happy birthday Jenna!

We had ice cream cake and a couple of drinks before heading downtown to begin our Trolley Pub Raleigh adventure.

If you don’t already know, Trolley Pub is essentially a roving bar. You bring your own wine and beer and drink while you ride around the city. Trolley Pub is powered by pedaling, so instead of sitting on traditional bar stools you’re on a bike seat (with a lap seatbelt connected to the trolley).

The whole crew on the Trolley Pub.

We had blast! I highly recommend it if you’re in the Raleigh area. According to the website, Trolley Pub is also located in Virginia, Wisconsin, Texas, Pennsylvania, and St. Thomas.

Derek and I didn’t get back from Raleigh until 2am. The next morning we woke up around 10am, got ready, packed, and headed out the door to meet my family in Chattanooga, Tennessee for Jared’s big race. My brother Jared and I signed up for the 7 Bridges and 4 Bridges Marathon and Half-Marathon, respectively. However, due to injuries I wasn’t able to run the half. Instead I decided to walk the 2 Bridges 5K with Derek, my mom, and my dad while Jared raced.

We arrived in Chattanooga around 7pm after a 7.5 hour drive. We immediately dropped our stuff off at the Downtown Chattanooga Residence Inn (which was a great place to stay, by the way) and walked across the street to meet my family at Big River Grille for dinner. The food and beer were delicious, and it was so great to see my family! By the time we finished eating/catching up and walked back to the hotel it was time to hit the sack.

Jared’s race started at 7am, so we were all up around 5:30am to get ready. We walked over to the start since it was less than 1 mile away. I was impressed with Jared’s calm demeanor; I would probably be freaking out. Before we knew it, he was off. My parents, Derek, and I waited around at the start for another half hour before our 5K started at 7:30am.

IMG_0546

We took some sweet pre-dawn photos on the winner’s podium.

We were treated to a beautiful sunrise while we waited.

IMG_0527

Our 5K only went across 2 bridges, but the course was gorgeous!

IMG_0528

IMG_0536

I stopped to get a photo of this sculpture while we were walking. Chattanooga has cool and interesting art all over the city.

We finished the 5K a little after 8am.

IMG_0541

With about 3 hours to kill before we expected Jared to finish, we walked back to the hotel to eat breakfast, change clothes, and hang out for a bit.

On the walk back to the finish we noticed gold shoe prints on the sidewalk ever few hundred feet. It turns out that they were showing different dance steps. I took a picture of the waltz.

IMG_0544

Isn’t that cool? Downtown Chattanooga is awesome! I wish we had more time to explore. We all decided we should go back sometime to check it out.

My parents, Derek, and I waited at the finish, anxiously looking out for Jared. We were all so pumped when we saw him come around the corner looking strong!

IMG_0548

The classic victory stance of a marathon-finisher. Go Jared!

I think finishing a marathon is a huge accomplishment in itself, but he finished in his goal time of 4 hours exactly. How awesome is that?!? I’m so glad that Derek and I could be there with my parents to see Jared complete his first marathon.

After we found Jared, it was time to refuel. We headed to Mellow Mushroom for pizza and beer. NOM.

IMG_0552

Around 1pm, after just 18 hours in Chattanooga, Derek and I hopped in the car to start the 7.5 hour journey back to Durham.

It was a crazy, hectic weekend, but we had fun. I’m proud of my brother for finishing his first marathon. It was inspiring to see him finish the race after all of his training. Congratulations Jared!

In Case of Accident Bring Cheese and Crackers {Fun Friday}

Well I’m posting another Fun “Friday” post on Saturday. Fail. I didn’t get back into town from Kentucky until 1AM Tuesday morning, and it threw off my week a bit. Apologies for the delay! Without further ado, here are some pictures, videos, and stories that made me smile or laugh this week. Enjoy!

Derek is a big Star Wars fan, so I got a kick out of showing him this picture.

According to the source, this little guy won 3rd place in a PetSmart Star Wars competition. I’d love to see the 1st and 2nd place pups because I think this one is great.

Since I’m apparently going through a dog phase, next up is a video of a very vocal dog who hates the alarm clock more than most people do.

You can almost hear him whining, “Turn it offfffffff!”

As a social worker, learning about innovative, community-based non-profit organizations always makes me smile. This week I found out about The Oregon Public House, which is a non-profit pub.  The Oregon Public House seeks to create a “family-friendly pub environment where our neighbors from the surrounding area can come to enjoy community around good food and craft beer while supporting great causes.” The video below explains more about the non-profit and the charities involved.

I’m a fan of their motto as well.

change-the-world

What a cool idea. If I ever make it out to Oregon I plan on visiting.

Finally, I love this winery’s sense of humor. One can only hope for an “unfortunate” wine truck accident.

Happy weekend to you!

Every Loaf Of Bread Is A Tragic Story {Fun Friday}

Happy Labor Day weekend! I am THRILLED it’s a three day weekend. This week was the most grueling week of work since I started. All of my patients this week were either very sick or had complex social situations. I worked late every single day and still didn’t get everything done. I am definitely thankful for a few days off to relax. Needless to say, my crazy week kept me from blogging as much as usual and explains why I’m a bit late with the Fun Friday post. Better late than never!

To start things off, I want to share an article from The Boston Globe.  The article is about a love story that spans more than 60 years. In 1950, Cynthia Riggs and Howard Attebery met working at marine geology lab in California. They were friends and even wrote to each other in code, but nothing became of the friendship beyond that summer. Both Riggs and Attebery married, had children, divorced, and changed careers. They led full lives and never crossed paths after that summer in 1950. That is, until 2012 when Riggs received a familiar coded letter. After more than 60 years Attebery tracked Riggs down and sent her a letter, which ended up being the very delayed beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Up next is a cute video of a dog named Mille helping her owners carry the groceries.

Her owners’ accents are just as entertaining as her skills. It took me a couple seconds to figure out that they were speaking English.

I also enjoyed the sign below.

I think I’ll start referring to beer as “success stories.”

Finally, since Derek and I have been watching Lord of the Rings lately, I want to share an older video of Dominic Monaghan prank interviewing Elijah Wood. I can’t imagine what Wood was thinking during the interview. He handles it much better than I would.

When will you wear wigs???

Have a great weekend!
