Birthday Fun {Weekend Recap}

Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t posted since the end of January. Last week was insane at work. I had my patient case load (which is more than enough to keep me busy), and I was covering for another social worker. Whew! I’m glad it’s over. This week is already so much better.

Enough about work though. I’m writing because I want to share some of my weekend. I celebrated my 25th birthday!

Well, actually my coworkers kicked off the celebrations on Thursday by bringing me this delicious, gigantic piece of strawberry shortcake from Nantucket Grill here in Durham.

Personally I think their food is just OK for the price, with the exception of their cake. It is AMAZING. They have a good variety, too. It’s definitely worth checking it out if you’re local.

On Friday I took a half-day at work. I decided to take the afternoon off to get my hair cut and have a little “me time.” I was starving when I left work, so I headed to one of my favorite restaurants in downtown Durham: Parker and Otis.

IMG_0855  IMG_0853

It’s conveniently right around the corner from where I get my hair cut. I got the three salad plate with tortellini pasta salad, fruit, and curry chicken salad. So good!

IMG_0854

After lunch I walked down the street to get a much-needed trim and highlights. While my hair did its thing, I read trashy magazines and drank wine. Yes, my hair salon offers complimentary adult beverages, and yes, I drank wine at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. I was celebrating, and it was 5 o’clock somewhere. 🙂

IMG_0859

I spent the rest of the afternoon laying on the couch watching Friends. Derek got home later in the evening (thanks med school), and we headed out for a late dinner at Sake Bomb, our favorite sushi place. In addition to sushi, I got this fancy drink. It’s called a “Melon Ball.”

IMG_0862

On Saturday, my actual birthday, I received several birthday phone calls, cards, and Facebook notes. Nothing makes you feel more loved than hearing from friends and family. My parents even posted this collage! The outfits are excellent.

Derek and I slept in that morning and then headed to Target to pick up a few things. In typical Target fashion this resulted in us walking out of the store with way more than we planned to get. #1 rule of Target: always get a cart. You will need it.

After our Target trip we got outside for a walk. It was a beautiful sunny day, which is amazing considering my birthday typically coincides with terrible weather.

IMG_0865

By the time we got back we had worked up an appetite. Derek took me out for lunch at The Original Q Shack.

IMG_0867

I would argue that the best part of living in the South is barbecue.

IMG_0868

After lunch Derek and I relaxed at home for the rest of the afternoon. He had to be at the hospital at 6am on Sunday for work, so I headed over to my best friend Jenna’s house for some more birthday fun while he got a good night’s sleep.

Jenna, my other friends Katy and Julie, and I spent the evening eating pizza, drinking wine, and watching funny movies. I couldn’t ask for a better way to spend the evening. 🙂 (Side note: I love the name of this wine we drank.)

IMG_0869

On Sunday morning Julie, Jenna, and I went to church and grabbed brunch at Relish. I had never been there before since I’m not out in Raleigh that often, and the food was great. I got a BLT with fried egg, and it was the best brunch I’ve had in a long time.

IMG_0871

Loved hanging out with these two!

Finally, Jenna and I wrapped up the weekend with hiking at Umstead. The weather here was incredible on Sunday. It was sunny and 70 degrees!

We found some rocks that reminded us of the cover of The LIttle Mermaid and decided to recreate Ariel’s pose.

It was a great birthday weekend, and I’m so thankful for my wonderful husband, family, and friends who helped me celebrate. Here’s to making 25 the best year yet!

90th Birthday Celebrations {Weekend Recap}

Hope you had a great weekend! Mine was absolutely wonderful. I flew into Lexington on Thursday night to spend a long weekend with my family.

IMG_0444

I spent Thursday night talking and catching up with my parents. After all of the chatting and a glass of wine,  I was exhausted and went to bed early. After a restorative, glorious 8 hours of sleep, I woke up and went for a 4 mile run through the neighborhood.

IMG_0442

I enjoyed running in the morning. It was a lot cooler, and I liked being done with the workout early in the day. Maybe I should try running before work?

I spent most of Friday relaxing and helping my parents get ready for hosting my grandpa’s birthday dinner. (Friday was his actual birthday.) Some of his nieces and nephews (my mom’s cousins) flew in from Colorado to surprise him at the dinner. He was so shocked and excited when he saw them. It was a great way to kick off the birthday celebrations. 🙂

We celebrated with some delicious food and drinks.

IMG_0447

It’s not a Friday in the Brown household without vodka tonics. Cheers!

We started out with snacks: olives, veggies, ranch dip, beer cheese, and crackers. If you haven’t had beer cheese yet, you need it in your life. It’s one of my Kentucky favorites.

IMG_0448

For dinner we had pork and chicken barbecue, slaw with apples, green beans, baked beans, and potato salad. I was lurking in the kitchen while my dad cooked, getting tips on how he made everything.

IMG_0449 IMG_0450

I forgot to get a picture, but we had chocolate silk pie and banana pudding for dessert. I’m not usually a big dessert person, but holy cow the desserts were awesome.

On Saturday morning I went on a 3 mile walk around the neighborhood with my parents and then ran a few errands with them.

IMG_0451

I love driving around Lexington because of views like this.

We spent the afternoon watching the UK vs. Ohio University football game. Scooter and I took a nap during the first half.

IMG_0456

That evening we watched movies and rested up for the big party on Sunday.

I started off Sunday morning with a 7 mile run. The weather was perfect. It was in the low- to mid-60s, cloudy, and breezy. I felt fantastic, and the views on the run were beautiful.

IMG_0458

IMG_0463

Oh hey horses.

It was the best long run I’ve had since I started training for my half-marathon.

IMG_0465

Still smiling after 7 miles! It was a good run.

IMG_0464

Excuse the blurriness. I guess I fogged up my phone camera during the run.

After the run, my dad had another gourmet breakfast waiting for me. Can you believe he makes breakfasts like this everyday? I am spoiled.

IMG_0457

Small omelet with apple chicken sausage and oat bran pancakes with blue berries and whipped cream.

I showered and got ready for my grandpa’s big party. We headed over a couple of hours early to set everything up at his house.

IMG_0466

Ready to party.

Some friends from church catered, and Ms. Kim, who also made my wedding cake, made a delicious lemon-flavored birthday cake. I’m sad I forgot to get a picture of it!

IMG_0467

Over 90 people showed up to celebrate my grandpa. It was amazing to see how many lives he has touched in his 90 years. I can only hope that I will be as healthy and as loved when I’m 90.

I’m sad to leave my family, but it was a fantastic weekend and celebration. Happy 90th birthday, Pop-Pop!

Have You Seen Your Cat? {Fun Friday}

This Fun Friday post is brought to you from Lexington, Kentucky! I’m spending a long weekend at my parents’ house to celebrate my grandpa’s 90th birthday. It is SO great to be home. I haven’t seen my family since I graduated back in May, and I am excited to spend time with everyone, especially for such a happy occasion.

Happy 90th birthday, Pop-Pop!

On to some pictures, videos, and stories that made me smile or laugh this week .  . .

I was laughing out loud when I saw this spider dog video on Good Morning America today.

Those poor, poor people.

Tina over at Carrots ‘n’ Cake (one of my favorite blogs) shared this awkward parenting story by Glennon Melton on her post today. I found the description of an Uno game gone wrong hilarious. You’ll appreciate it even more if you’re a fan of Breaking Bad.

Since I already included a video of a dog pranking people, I think we need a video of people pranking dogs.

I love all the different reactions. The beagle puppy just doesn’t care.

With all the dog videos this week, I’ll wrap things up with a cat picture.

Happy Friday! Enjoy the weekend!

Favorite Posts: August 2014

August was a bit of a roller coaster ride. Highlights include passing my clinical licensing exam, Derek returning from Wilmington to start his family medicine rotation in Chapel Hill, completing the first 5 weeks of half-marathon training, and celebrating Derek’s birthday. However, it has also been quite stressful at work for both of us this month, and we were heartbroken when things didn’t work out with Wink. (P.S. She has since been adopted!!)

Now I am getting really excited about September. Next weekend I’m flying to Kentucky to celebrate my grandpa’s 90th birthday! I haven’t seen my family since I graduated in May, and I am beyond excited to see them. I am also pumped for fall. It’s definitely my favorite season. I love the weather (though fall weather doesn’t really start until October in North Carolina); it’s perfect for running, tailgating, and enjoying the beautiful views when the leaves change color. Not to mention I’m obsessed with all things pumpkin. I’m sure I’ll be posting some delicious pumpkin recipes over the next few months.

Before I get ahead of myself with my love for fall, here are my favorite posts from August 2014:

Happy Birthday Derek! {Fun Friday}

To Be Alive Is To Be Vulnerable

Happy Birthday Derek! {Fun Friday}

Happy Friday! We made it! And it’s not just any Friday here at the Pinkerton household; it’s Derek’s birthday! Happy 24th birthday to my amazing husband! I’m so excited to celebrate with him and our friends this weekend. I also cannot wait to give Derek his present.

Side note: I am the absolute worst about presents. If the present is for me, I do everything I can to find out what it is, and if the present is for someone else, it’s hard for me to keep it a surprise. I pride myself on being thoughtful about gifts, and I get more way more excited about giving them than receiving them. I’ve threatened to give Derek his gift all week, and he keeps making me wait until his actual birthday. What a party pooper.

Now let’s kick off what I’m sure will be a fun-filled weekend with some images, videos, and stories that made me smile or laugh this week . . .

Earlier this week I sent out a Facebook event invite to let people know that we’re going bowling for Derek’s birthday. In the process of putting it together, I found the perfect E-card for the invite:

1bbb9-2

Since Derek is turning 24, I feel the need to share the video below. One of my friends from grad school showed this in our adult development class, and it cracked me up. Enjoy!

The line about Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s is so true.

I’m a little late to the party with this next video, but it is quite funny. It’s a little long and slow at the beginning, but it gets better and better as it goes on.

Who is champ?

To wrap things up I’ll share a clip from one of my other favorite TV shows- New Girl.  I can’t wait for the fall TV premiers that start in September!

I feel like every household should have its own douchebag jar. 🙂

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
