A Swift Kick In The Butt {Fun Friday}

Hallelujah, it’s Friday!!! Work was absolutely crazy this week. Obviously I know that protecting confidentiality is of the utmost importance, but sometimes I REALLY wish I didn’t have to abide by HIPAA regulations. You would not believe some of the things I see and hear with my cases. My friends Brittany and Caroline, who are also social workers, devised a plan for us to write a book called I Can’t Make This Sh*t Up. We can all attest to the cliché that truth is stranger than fiction.

Anywayyyy, on to some Fun Friday stories, pictures, and videos!

Let’s get this party started with a dog video. (I have a dog video problem.)

He is so perplexed by that fountain.

Next up is a “Lip Flip” segment from The Tonight Show. Have you seen this yet? This one with Jimmy Fallon and Billy Crystal is by far the funniest one to me.

I find it unsettling and hilarious.

Below is an amusing Calvin and Hobbes strip that I want to put up in my office.

Sometimes we all need one. 🙂

Finally I want to share an NPR segment called, “Beyond Charity: Turning The Soup Kitchen Upside Down.” While charity is certainly necessary in the short-term, it is often not the best way to help people long-term.  Robert Egger, the founder of DC Central Kitchen, noticed that many of the individuals eating at local soup kitchens were battling addiction and facing incarceration in addition to dealing with unemployment and homelessness. Egger decided to take a “teach a man to fish” approach and created a culinary job training program, which teaches individuals how to cook and earn a food handler’s license. The individuals in the job training program help produce approximately 10,000 meals each day. About 5,000 meals are sent to local nonprofit organizations and another 5,000 meals are distributed to local, low-income schools.

My graduate school classmate Allison is starting up a non-profit with a similar model in Chapel Hill, NC. It’s called Made With Love Bakery. Made With Love Bakery is a “faith-based transitional employment bakery sharing the love of Jesus Christ with individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness, giving them a second chance at employment and equipping them with the training and support they need to overcome poverty.” You can find out more on the website or her blog.

Sheesh, I’m supposed to turn off the social work for these posts. What can I say? I love seeing people find creative ways to address social issues. It inspires me.

Have a great weekend!!

First Moon Party {Fun Friday}

It’s Friday! Hallelujah! This week was TOUGH. Anything that could go wrong did go wrong at work. However, I like a challenge, and I really enjoy working with veterans and their families. They’re such a unique, special population, and it’s an honor to serve those who served.

Anyway, it’s time to separate myself from work by looking back at some things that made me smile or laugh this week.

My fun Friday posts make it clear that I’m a big Jimmy Fallon fan. I try to mix things up, but I just have to share this one.  Behold, The Roots’ Harry Potter rap. The Roots + Harry Potter= a happy Ali.

Earlier this week I bought a frame for my clinical social work associate’s license.

For some bizarre reason, the children’s drawing and letter on the lower right of the frame insert caught my attention.

The drawing is normal, but I thought the letter was pretty funny. I know the writing is teeny tiny so I’ll pull out a few key phrases:

  • “the available position filled”
  • “we cannot give your application consideration at the present time”
  • “kept on file for future reference”

You can’t actually see the italicized words, but I’m filling in the blanks. It is a rejection letter!! Who would frame that?? I probably have an odd sense of humor, but I was simultaneously puzzled and amused by it.

Next up is a video about a girl’s “first moon” party. I aspire to be like the mom in this video someday.

Derek’s first rotation is OBGYN, and I told him that I’m going to call him “the vagician.” He didn’t find it as funny as I did. 🙂

Finally, I want to share the image below. I always enjoy a little self-deprecating humor.

I Wish I Was 4 Again {Fun Friday}

It’s fun Friday at Brown is the New Pink! Check out the pictures and links below if you need to smile or laugh.

To kick things off, I want to share an excerpt from John Legend’s graduation speech at the University of Pennsylvania’s commencement ceremony:

Professor Cornel West gives us a word for what this kind of love looks like in public. That word is justice. If you’re committed to loving in public, it requires you opening your eyes to injustice, to see the world through the eyes of another. This is not a passive activity. You have to read. You have to travel to other neighborhoods, other parts of the world. You may have to get your hands dirty. You have to allow people to love you, and you have to love them back

If you have time, the full speech is definitely worth reading.

Have you ever struggled with making an important decision in your love life? Perhaps you can relate to the kiddo in the video below. He is adorable. 🙂

Here’s another cool story from Humans of New York. It shows that just 15 seconds of courage can change your life.

“We’ve been married 31 years.”
“How’d you meet?”
“I saw her on a bus, put my watch in my pocket, sat down next to her, and asked her for the time.”

Finally, Jimmy Fallon– er, I mean Gary Frick’s advertisement for dog treats was cute and funny. What a sweet dog!

Have a great weekend!

Don’t Be A Psycho {Fun Friday}

I can’t believe it’s finally here; I graduate tomorrow! I’m so excited to spend the weekend celebrating with my family and friends. I will write more about the end of this chapter of my life next week, but for now I want to continue with Smile & Laugh Fridays. If your interested, the two previous posts are Smile, It’s the Weekend and It’s Gonna Be May.

Let’s kick things off with a little grammar humor.

I like cooking

Have you seen Jimmy Fallon’s hashtag segments? They always make me laugh. In honor of Mother’s Day, I want to share the segment from this week. #MomQuotes

I saw this sweet post from Humans of New York:

1939614_636575966416507_539704968_n

“One day a crazy looking homeless guy came to the door, and we were about to close the door on him, but my mother saw him and shouted: ‘Hey Eugene!’ She knew his name! Then she ran around the kitchen putting all sorts of food into tupperware, and brought it out to him. After he left, we asked my mom why she gave him so much food. She told us: ‘You never know how Jesus is going to look when he shows up.’ She was always saying that– it was a spiritual thing. Then you know what happened? Two months later, that same man showed up on the door step, clean shaven, and wearing a suit. And he had an envelope with money for my mother. ‘Ms. Rosa always believed in me,’ he said. I’ll never forget it! Eugene was his name.”

Finally, I frequently watch The Colbert Report, and I loved one of his recent openers. Colbert satirizes “Watters’ World,” a segment on The O’Reilly Factor. As a young person who cares about politics and my government representation, I much prefer “Tad’s Turf.” 🙂

Have a great weekend!

Smile, It’s the Weekend

As my previous posts indicate, I am a soon-to-be social worker. I love what I do, and I know that it is what I am meant to be doing. That being said, it is really difficult work sometimes. While I see some great moments for people, I am more often present for moments of struggle, loss, or death. It is fulfilling work, but it is also draining. By the time I get to Friday afternoon I usually need something lighthearted, touching, or funny to separate myself from work. From now on, I will be posting things on Friday afternoon that make me smile or laugh. I think it will help me transition into the weekend, and I hope that it will help anyone else who just needs to see a little bit of good in the world.

I didn’t think of this idea until late last night, so I’m going to cheat and post today instead. 🙂

Remember this moment from Miss Congeniality . . .

perfect date

So awkwardly awesome.

Yesterday, I saw this adorable video of a man finding out he’s going to be a grandfather. The look of pure joy on his face is priceless.

I LOVE Parks & Rec. It’s probably my favorite show on TV right now. All of the characters make me laugh for different reasons, and I appreciate that the show can be touching without being corny. This is a little old now, but it still makes me laugh:

Finally, I recently became a big Jimmy Fallon fan, and this video of jokes for a depressed panda cracked me up. I believe one of his writers is actually dancing around in that suit.

Now I’m off to Brewgaloo for a fun afternoon with friends. Have a great weekend!
