Brazil’s 12th Man {Fun Friday}

Happy weekend to you! I should probably start calling these posts Fun Weekend, but Fun Friday has a better ring to it. I’m late with the post. Again. Sorry! Yesterday I left work and headed straight to Wilmington to spend the weekend with Derek. (If you didn’t see my last post, he’s in Wilmington for his OBGYN rotation.) I didn’t actually get here until after 8pm, at which point we were both starving and immediately went to dinner. Needless to say, blog posting wasn’t happening at 10pm on a Friday night. Though the combination of being deliriously tired and drinking one cocktail (doesn’t take much these days) could have led to my best writing yet! 😉

Without further ado, here are some pictures/stories/videos that made me smile or laugh this week.

In my Great Form Gary! {Fun Friday} post a couple of weeks ago, I included a video entitled “How to Make a Hit Pop Song.” Here’s part 2 to that video:

Now you know the more advanced techniques.

This next video is a classic. I’m sure most people have seen it already, but I laugh so hard every time I watch it.

Did you see the latest World Cup games? The Germany vs. Brazil game was brutal. Brazilian fan Clovis Fernandes’ face says it all.

Fernandes considers himself Brazil’s “12th man,” for good reason. The FIFA video below explains Fernandes’ history of Brazilian soccer fandom.

In a humble act of good sportsmanship,  Fernandes handed over the replica of the World Cup trophy to some German fans.

What a guy.

Finally, I have absolutely loved hearing about Derek’s adventures in OBGYN. In reference to the First Moon Party video (seen in the First Moon Party {Fun Friday} post), I have been calling him “the vagician.” I personally find it hilarious, but Derek disagrees. 🙂 Joking aside, I’m very proud of him, and yesterday was a big day. Derek helped deliver a baby!! How cool is that?

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Happy 4th of July! {Fun Friday}

Happy 4th of July!

It’s a patriotic fun Friday here on Brown is the New Pink. Derek and I are hosting a cookout this evening and possibly going to see fireworks tonight at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. I’ll be posting a full weekend recap at the beginning of next week, but for now, enjoy a few things that made me smile or laugh this week.

Did you watch the US vs. Belgium game?? I’m bummed that we’re out of the World Cup, but it was a great game. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It makes me want to watch soccer more often. One good thing that came out of the loss was a compilation of photos of things Tim Howard could save. The first picture on there is perfect for today.

Next up is a very bizarre but entertaining video of a man who puts on his pants without using his hands.

The music makes it so much better.

On a more serious note, the following Always commercial addresses how the phrase “like a girl” is used in a derogatory manner. It’s cool and eye-opening to see how differently adults and young girls react to the phrase.

I think it’s a great campaign. When I ran cross country in high school we made shirts with a similar message.

I run #LikeAGirl. (P.S. The shirt is part of my t-shirt blanket, which is the greatest thing ever! Mine was made by Project Repat, and I highly recommend them. The blankets are cut and sewn in the US, and one of the companies that makes the quilts is in Morganton, NC!)

Last, but certainly not least, is a video of fireworks filmed with a drone. So beautiful and cool!

Hope everyone has a safe and fun weekend!

Great Form Gary! {Fun Friday}

Happy weekend to you! I’m posting late again because I was having too much fun last night. Between studying for his Step 1 exam and traveling to California, Derek and I haven’t had much time together lately. We have declared this weekend “Ali and Derek Weekend.” Last night we went out to dinner at a local Mexican restaurant. After dinner we watched an episode of House of Cards (we’re obsessed) at home and then went to see How to Train Your Dragon 2. Derek and I are both big animated movie fans, and How to Train Your Dragon is one of our favorites. The sequel was just as good. We highly recommend seeing it!

It was a great Friday night, and now I’m back to share videos, stories, and pictures that made me laugh or smile this week. Enjoy!

Have you ever wondered how pop music is made? Watch the video below for step-by-step instructions on how to make a hit pop song. The one from the video is stuck in my head now.

Watch it again and see if you can catch all of the Jennifer Lawrence references.

I post a lot of animal videos, and this week is no exception. However, I’m stepping out of the typical dog and cat videos to show you Gary the goat. The gentleman narrating the video is Australian so please excuse the harsh language and enjoy the accent!

Great form Gary!

I thoroughly enjoyed this blog post on 12 Classic Mom Texts. My mom is actually a pretty good texter, but I would add on number 13 for her. Number 13: Excessive use of smiley faces and exclamation points!! 🙂 🙂 !!! (I secretly love it thought because it always makes me laugh.)

I’ll wrap things up with a picture of my favorite demonstration of patriotism at the World Cup thus far. Teddy Roosevelt was spotted cheering during the USA vs. Portugal game! How kind of him to time travel just for the game. 🙂

First Moon Party {Fun Friday}

It’s Friday! Hallelujah! This week was TOUGH. Anything that could go wrong did go wrong at work. However, I like a challenge, and I really enjoy working with veterans and their families. They’re such a unique, special population, and it’s an honor to serve those who served.

Anyway, it’s time to separate myself from work by looking back at some things that made me smile or laugh this week.

My fun Friday posts make it clear that I’m a big Jimmy Fallon fan. I try to mix things up, but I just have to share this one.  Behold, The Roots’ Harry Potter rap. The Roots + Harry Potter= a happy Ali.

Earlier this week I bought a frame for my clinical social work associate’s license.

For some bizarre reason, the children’s drawing and letter on the lower right of the frame insert caught my attention.

The drawing is normal, but I thought the letter was pretty funny. I know the writing is teeny tiny so I’ll pull out a few key phrases:

  • “the available position filled”
  • “we cannot give your application consideration at the present time”
  • “kept on file for future reference”

You can’t actually see the italicized words, but I’m filling in the blanks. It is a rejection letter!! Who would frame that?? I probably have an odd sense of humor, but I was simultaneously puzzled and amused by it.

Next up is a video about a girl’s “first moon” party. I aspire to be like the mom in this video someday.

Derek’s first rotation is OBGYN, and I told him that I’m going to call him “the vagician.” He didn’t find it as funny as I did. 🙂

Finally, I want to share the image below. I always enjoy a little self-deprecating humor.

Have a great weekend!

Dear Kitten {Fun Friday}

Happy Friday!! This week, especially the first half of it, was tough for me. (Hence the lack of posts.) I am the type of person who needs a plan, and my orientation has been all over the place for a number of reasons. Fortunately I have great coworkers looking out for me. We came up with a more solidified plan for the next few weeks, so I’m feeling a lot better about everything.

Though things are certainly improving on the new job stress front, I was definitely in need of a good laugh. Below are a few things that made me smile or laugh this week. I’m hope they help you de-stress too!

First up is the Friskies “Dear Kitten” commercial. I’m more of a dog person, but this commercial made me want to get a cat. The premise of the commercial is an older cat passing on its wisdom to a new kitten. The cats in the commercial are adorable, and the commercial itself is hilarious. The part about the monster that can eat and yell at the same time is priceless.

On to the next one . . .

“I had a person behind a ticket counter give me a roll of luggage tape before she left. I then used a wheel chair that had a tall pole on the back of it and taped my iPhone to that. Then I would put it on the moving walkway for a dolly shot. I also used the extended handle on my computer bag and taped the iPhone to my handle. I would tuck different stuff under the bag to get the right angle. For the escalator shot I had to sprint up the steps after I got my shot so the computer bag didn’t hit the top and fall back down. Quite fun!”

This quote is from Richard Dunn, the gentleman who created the brilliant video below. Apparently Dunn was stuck in the Las Vegas airport overnight and decided to put the time to good use.

That video is seriously impressive. Unless you live under a rock, you know that the World Cup started this week. I don’t ordinarily follow soccer, but I enjoy watching the World Cup. Whether you care about it or not, I think everyone can appreciate the tweet below.

For my final entry I want to share a video I saw a couple of weeks ago and forgot to include in previous fun Friday posts. It’s a sweet video of a dad and his daughter lip syncing to the song “Love Is An Open Door” from Frozen. I love that the dad gets so into it. You can tell he has heard that song a million times.

Give It All You Got! {Fun Friday}

Woo it’s the weekend!! I am late with my post again this week. Sorry! It was my first week at work, and I was exhausted when I got home yesterday. I stayed late at work to sit it on a family meeting. One of the tougher, but very important, parts of my job will be participating in meetings with families to discuss changing the goals of care from cure or recovery to comfort. The social worker and team of physicians I shadowed yesterday did a wonderful job in the meeting. They explained everything in a way that was easy to understand, and they really took their time and encouraged the family to ask questions and express concerns. The whole week made me excited about working alongside such compassionate people and caring for veterans and their families.

Enough about work, on to this weeks’ fun Friday (technically Saturday) post!

During the summer between my junior and senior year of college I interned at the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina. I helped coordinate all kinds of wishes, which was an amazing experience. MAW is such a special organization to me, and I loved a wish story that I saw this week. Hailey Bretzius, 9, decided that her wish was to have author R.J. Palacio visit her school. Palacio wrote the novel WonderWonder is about a fifth grade boy who has a facial deformity. The novel’s message centers on choosing kindness. Hailey, who has a benign tumor that’s been growing between the muscles on the left side of her face, identified with the main character. Though Hailey originally considered going to New York to meet her favorite author, she decided to share her wish with her classmates by inviting Palacio to come to her school. If your interested in reading more about the wish or seeing pictures, follow this link to the article.

The video below is so sweet! When the son in this video was 8 years old, he promised his father he would get him a 57 Chevy on his 57th birthday. Many years later, the son followed through on his promise and surprised his father with the car.

Do you ever have trouble waking up in the morning? This Great Dane puppy has some serious issues with waking up early. The video is adorable and pitiful in the best way.

I tend to post a lot of dog videos, but I decided to wrap things up with a goat video. It’s a whopping 7 seconds long. Give it all you got!

Have a fun and relaxing weekend!!

I Wish I Was 4 Again {Fun Friday}

It’s fun Friday at Brown is the New Pink! Check out the pictures and links below if you need to smile or laugh.

To kick things off, I want to share an excerpt from John Legend’s graduation speech at the University of Pennsylvania’s commencement ceremony:

Professor Cornel West gives us a word for what this kind of love looks like in public. That word is justice. If you’re committed to loving in public, it requires you opening your eyes to injustice, to see the world through the eyes of another. This is not a passive activity. You have to read. You have to travel to other neighborhoods, other parts of the world. You may have to get your hands dirty. You have to allow people to love you, and you have to love them back

If you have time, the full speech is definitely worth reading.

Have you ever struggled with making an important decision in your love life? Perhaps you can relate to the kiddo in the video below. He is adorable. 🙂

Here’s another cool story from Humans of New York. It shows that just 15 seconds of courage can change your life.

“We’ve been married 31 years.”
“How’d you meet?”
“I saw her on a bus, put my watch in my pocket, sat down next to her, and asked her for the time.”

Finally, Jimmy Fallon– er, I mean Gary Frick’s advertisement for dog treats was cute and funny. What a sweet dog!

Have a great weekend!
